THE HUDDLE (Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin) / two excavator shovels, engines, controls. / ca. 100cm x 800cm x 800cm / 2025
Two excavator shovels lie clattering away alone on the terrace of the Neue Nationalgalerie. Having relieved them of their original function, Katja Aufleger makes these amputated machine attachments take part in a real dialogue in her installation, The Huddle. The title of the piece refers to the gathering of a sports team to discuss strategy before the next play. Similarly, the two buckets seem to be communicating, following a logic of their own. Although construction equipment is a familiar sight in public spaces, the spectacle of the two buckets presented here is disconcerting. The artist gives us new perspectives on the relationship between humans and machines: Are they trying to tell us something, and if so, what? Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin
